Colonoscopy: The Joy of Turning 50

Why am I so passionate about this?
- According to the Washington Post/Cosumer Reports Colorectal cancer usually develops over 10 to 15 years without causing symptoms. Most cases start as noncancerous polyps. Detecting and removing polyps prevents them from developing into cancer.
- The survival rate after detecting localized cancer is 90%. Once the cancer has spread, the percentage drops to 9%.
- John, my husband of 29 years, died in 2007 of colon cancer. He was 50 years old.
I know it’s not fun. The prep work alone is can scare most people off. The time it takes is a drop of water in the bucket of life. It can save you and your loved ones a lot of anguish.
Some fear the prep work. It isn’t pretty. But consider this; you’ll be clean as a whistle!
Some fear the actual procedure. A mild amnesia drug is administered and most people remember nothing about the process.
Some fear the expense. Most preventive colonoscopies are covered 100% by insurance.
Bottom line; if you’re 50 or never had a baseline colonoscopy,
JUST DO IT!
